Dunkirk

As the commemorations continue for the 70th anniversary of the evacuation of Dunkirk, I remember several years ago while still a serving officer, renewing the firearms certificate of a gentleman in Llangollen. While sitting in his house, I noticed a Dunkirk Association plaque on the wall and asked him about it. He'd been on the beach and exhausted and in total desperation, had thrown off most of his kit and decided to swim rather than die. Incredibly he'd got a few hundred yards before one of the little boats stopped and he was hauled in. His war continued and he was back in France on D-Day. Remarkable man, remarkable achievement.
